Windows 10 Mobile Build 186.71
To get on top of things and grab the update now on your Windows Phone head to Settings > Update & Security > Phone Update to start downloading it. You’ll need to restart your phone for the update to complete.
According to Microsoft exec Gabe Aul’s blog post, this build includes the following fixes:
Windows Update performance and reliability improvementsImprovements in migration of data profiles and messaging settings when upgraded from Windows Phone 8.1.SensorCore API’s are now upgraded correctly from Windows Phone 8.1; allowing applications, including many fitness applications, to correctly access movement data.SD card detection has been improved on boot and after insertion; File Explorer now handles the removal of an SD card when the default for apps or photos are set to SD.Improvements in the Edge browser, including PDF rendering.Bluetooth improvements when re-connecting to already paired devices and cars; turn by turn directions, and when using Cortana with the Microsoft Band.Improvements in Settings when downloading Maps or changing Quick Settings.Reinstalling Groove Music from the Windows Store no longer causes DRM music playback issues. Groove Music local song collections are now more quickly imported within the applicationDevice power improvements after listening to music, after missed phone calls when iris detection is disabled, and when downloading updates. In app purchases now work correctly when cellular data is disabled.Improvements to the reliability of Kids Corner.
As is usually the case with Windows 10 Mobile updates, for me anyway, it can take a while for the update to complete. I’ve been using a Lumia 635 to test these new builds and it usually takes a couple of hours to complete. However, since this is actually considered a Cumulative Update, things are happening a bit faster. After you get the update on your phone, leave a comment below and let us know how things are working. PROs: My Verizon Mobile works again – it hadn’t over the past, two builds. Cut and paste between Edge and SMS works again – it hadn’t over the past two builds. Bluetooth can now connect with Ford and Microsoft SYNC, where previously it never worked with Windows 10 Mobile TP builds. The phone actually only requires one soft reset… to soft reset. Previous builds required multiple soft resets with the lock sreen frozen in between tries. And the embedded PDF reader in Edge eliminates the annoying jump to app selection menu. CONs: MMS still does not work, which went away after the weekend update to 10586.43 – this represents a MUST FIX. Not sure on battery life yet but previous builds have resulted in a rapid draining at moderate loading. Thankfully, Cortana did not reset for yet another retraining, but Lumia Motion Data has Recent Places going to locations not traveled – ever. That may clear, though, going forward. GPS has tended to cut in and out on previous builds and will monitor for improved tracking, using Waze and HERE Drive apps. And Groove continues to not transfer a majority (upwards of 75%) of album art but… whatever. The songs are there, which must count for something. SUMMARY: Each build brings improvements and 10586.71 certainly seems closer to final than the builds from November 2015, when Windows Insider first queried “Is this build ready for final?” Chuckle, chuckle. However, battery life will likely only improve with those phones built specifically for Windows 10 Mobile. Older phones will have to embrace and own power anxiety upon upgrading.
