Update 6/12/2013: Another update folks. Video Buzz is back once again! They have a new deployment method, and you can check out the full details here. Video Buzz doesn’t have all of the features you’re used to with other official YouTube apps, but it does a great job. It has popular video categories and a quality Search feature. Plus you can add favorites to a playlist via your YouTube account and access them from Video Buzz.
Add Video Buzz to Roku
You won’t find Video Buzz in the regular Channel Store on the Roku as it’s a hidden one. Just follow my article on how to add hidden channels to Roku and type: videobuzz as the access code to add it. Or simply log into your Roku account on the web and go to this link.
Turn on your Roku and allow it to update your channel, and you’ll find Video Buzz on the list.
After launching it, you’ll get the following menu where you can browse through different categories like Top Rated, Top Channels, and the ability to simply Search for what you’re looking for.
The Search feature does an adequate job of finding what you’re looking for. Of course the more specific you are the better. For instance here I searched for groovyPost.
Then was able to browse through episodes of our TechGroove Podcast and other how to videos we have up on our YouTube channel.
If you want to watch your specific playlists, log in to your YouTube account and add the videos you want. Then go to Settings in Video Buzz and enter in your YouTube username.
Then you can see videos from your Playlist, what you’ve uploaded, and video categories from your account.
It’s not a perfect solution, and requires some work to get the videos you want to watch in a playlist or organized way. But this is a good alternative until or if Google decides to add an official YouTube channel to Roku.
Update: Well, that didn’t last long. It appears that Roku management has asked VideoBuzz to close down today. Here’s the screenshot I got after seeing a comment about it from one of our readers. In the meantime, if you have an Android or iOS smartphone or tablet, you can stream YouTube to your Roku with the free Twonky Beam App.
